Derek Young, Head Swim Coach

I am very excited for the opportunity to join the BGNW Marlins family.  I believe my approach to coaching, on-deck demeanor, past experiences, and long-term vision will make me an asset to that community and I am looking forward to building on the in and out of water success of the Marlins and the Boys & Girls Club of Northern Westchester

Derek is the former Head Site Coach for the Seattle Metropolitan Aquatic Club (SMAC). He is proud to have grown from a new site in the fall of 2018 of 50 swimmers and no Senior Sectional, Futures, or Junior National qualifiers, to a site of 145 swimmers that has produced nearly 100 individual team records, 5 individual LSC records, and 15 Futures or Junior National qualifiers.

Prior to SMAC, Derek served as the Head Coach and CEO of the Sandhills Sand Sharks in NC. His other club coaching experiences have been in VA with Nations Capital, Dominion Valley and Arlington Aquatic swim clubs. He is a graduate of the University of Maryland.

Derek’s approach to coaching is to consistently promote a process-oriented mindset, advance organizational goals, and produce positive results. His vision is to promote the long-term development of all athletes and encourages the growth and success of the program. In addition, he is passionate that athletes train for, swim, and pursue the events that inspire them.
